In today’s environment where New Zealanders are becoming increasingly concerned about rising electricity prices, are conscious of more sustainable and self-sufficient modes of living, or are facing big costs in connecting remote properties to their local network, a Renewable Energy System may be an option.

A Renewable Energy System converts the energy in sunlight, wind, falling water, waves, or geothermal heat into a form we can use, such as heat or electricity.

Using renewable sources of energy promotes sustainable living, and does not involve the emission of “green house gases”, such as carbon dioxide which enters the atmosphere and contribute to climate change. Advances in technology mean that renewable sources of energy are now economically feasible in small-scale applications in remote locations (i.e off-the-grid homes) as well as in large scale applications in areas where the resource is abundant and can be harnessed by large conversion systems (i.e hydro-electric projects & wind farms).

Solar Cells (Photovoltaics PV)

Solar cells are thin wafers of silicon which, when exposed to sunlight, produce DC electric current. They are virtually maintenance free and fairly unobtrusive. Small PV systems are used extensively to power a range of equipment such as remote access gate controls and solar lighting, communications equipment, water pumps, and electric fences. Larger systems have been used for some time on homes, farms, public building, petrol stations and lighthouses in remote areas.

Inverters

Inverters are electronic devices which convert the power from the renewable source into AC power – compatible with mains powered equipment. They are available in a range of sizes and types, from low-cost low-powered units to run a laptop etc., to units capable of handling hundreds of kilowatts.

Batteries

A Renewable Energy System has to store the energy harvested for use when the energy source isn’t available. The most common storage method is lead-acid batteries specifically designed for the repeated and heavy duty discharge/charge rigours of a Renewable Energy System.

Arnold Jensen Electrical Ltd has a large range of Renewable Energy Systems and components and has experienced electrical technicians to ensure that the system you install specifically meets your requirements. We will help you accurately calculate your energy needs and the energy resources of your site, and then advise you on the size and kind of system you require.
