April has come and gone and still much of the central city cordon remains in place. Although the ongoing delays can be frustrating, there have been signs of progress, however – many large demolition projects are completed or nearly finished, and the recent reopening of the last section of Madras Street is something that surely every Christchurch motorist is pleased about! AJ Electrical too has been playing its part in the rebuild to date – contracts we have recently completed include:
- The new (and popular!) Dux De Lux in Addington.
- Relocating Telecom from the CBD to its new Walker Street premises.
- Relocating Westpac from the CBD to its new Show Place location.
- A new office complex for Armitage Williams Builders in Sir William Pickering drive.
As well as participating in the rebuild, we’ve been doing our best to address issues in the employment market. Unemployment in the 18-25 yrs age bracket is disproportionately high in New Zealand, and events in Christchurch have only exacerbated this problem locally. We believe that there’s never been a better time to consider entering the electrical trade in Canterbury, with the pending rebuild ensuring that there will be plenty of work for the next 20 years. We also encourage female apprentices to join the ranks – our profession needs more women!
CPIT’s National Certificate in Electrical Engineering (read more about it here) or SIT’s Certificate in Electrical Engineering (which you can read about here) are excellent starting points for a career in the industry.
Students usually come to us having completed a one year full time study course with SIT or CPIT to obtain their Level 2 & 3 pre-trade qualifications before becoming a full time Electrical Apprentice and completing their Level 4 trade exams.
We expect demand for our services to only increase in future years and so we anticipate the need or good, committed young electricians to join our numbers – if you’re considering a career as an electrician we encourage you to further investigate the options.
The Arnold Jensen Electrical Ltd. Team.
